Eastenders star Nicola Stapleton who plays the stripper Mandy in the soap, has seen her father jailed for failing to repay his debts. Vince Stapleton 60, was sentenced by Westminster Magistrates Court after he“repeatedly thumbed his nose” to court orders and warrnats demanding he make repayments and settle the debt. He had served 5 years in jail for his involvement in a VAT fraud scam that is estimated to be approx £9 million with himself being ordered to repay £1.7 million. However this was reduced to £220,000 after a judge heard that he could not afford to pay any more back. Mr Stapleton failed to repay this sum even though he illegally obtained mortgages to buy 2 houses. He reportedly bought one £370,000 house in London in 2007 and a further £295,000 property in Colchester in 2008, he obtained these by giving false information about his earnings and employment. When he started to struggle, Mr Stapleton used disability and housing benefits to keep up with repayments. At the time of buying the 2 properties he still had restrictions on his finances and owed the taxpayer in excess of £1.5 million. The judge sentenced Vince Stapleton to a 342 day jail sentence and was told that he must repay the outstanding debt. The judge also condemmed him for having "lied and lied again" and told him that on making the mortgage application, he committed a "serious fraud". Vince Stapleton will be released from jail if he repays his outstanding debt of £207,215. Advisors at Integrity have warned against trying to obtain finance by false means and say that this is an 'example of what can happen if you try to flout the law with regards to debt'.
